Summer is here…

Happy Father’s Day!

The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony was a very moving event for all in attendance. Even the rain could not put a damper on this special evening. You could have heard a pin drop when POAT President Juan Perez explained the circumstances surrounding Miami-Dade Officer Rick Wendlandt being shot on May 29, 1981, as he approached an occupied vehicle where an assault was occurring. Janice Wright,  the victim of the assault who assisted in getting back-up units to the scene after Officer Wendlandt was shot in the mouth, was at the podium with President Perez. Todd and Taylor Smith, the twin children of Trooper Robert Smith who was killed in the line of duty in 1997, sang a song as a tribute to their father. We would like to thank everyone involved in the planning and implementation of another memorable ceremony honoring all of our fallen heroes, as well as all of you who attended.
The Motorcycle Ride to benefit POAT’s Holiday Gifts for Surviving Children was held on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. There were close to 600 bikers who enjoyed the ride to the Keys on a beautiful sunny day and supported a great cause. We would like to thank the motor units from all of the police departments that assist every year in ensuring this is a safe and successful event. Thank you!
On Saturday, April 11, 2015, the POAT Walk Team participated in the Walk to Cure Diabetes at Zoo Miami. The POAT walk team raised $ 63,496 in sponsorship and donations. Since 2003, when POAT joined the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes, we have raised $ 745,093. That’s something we can all be proud of! Thanks to everyone for your continued support year after year.
Continue to remember POAT during your plea bargain negotiations.  If you have a defendant who requests to pay a fine in lieu of serving community service hours, you can request that the funds be sent to POAT.  Payment can be made in person, mailed to our office at 1030 NW 111th Avenue, Suite 232, Miami FL 33172 or paid online at www.poat.org.  What better way to support the families of fallen officers and those in critical need?

Thanks for your support and stay safe!
